If you must obey all the rules to make "good design" can creative work really be called creative? Good design perhaps relies on the rules, but I think that great design comes from understanding the rules, respecting them, knowing how to implement them, and then disregarding them. I respect the rules, and believe they came from generations of evolution in human art. The understanding we have of perspective and composition are not intrinsically understood by people, they had to be developed over thousands of years. That evolution could not have happened without the rule breakers. Someone had to have a crazy idea that went against what everyone else knew of art at the time to get from cave paintings to contemporary art.
