Week 8

Encouraging children to become makers and builders

This reading discusses introducing children to maker-culture. The practice of making is an informal type of learning, outside traditional academic environments, allowing people to become experts through creation. Encouraging kids to engage in this maker culture helps them become more autonomous learners and thinkers. The article uses the term “hackers” because of their tendency to question norms, and hopes to change the connotation of the word to a more positive. Hacking in the making sense involves taking materials from different sources and appropriating them for some other need.
